Telehealth: A Great Option for Quality Care

Open Door Health Center is now offering telehealth visits in our medical and behavioral health departments. This new option is both safe and effective.

You may be able to see your usual nurse and your regular provider without having to leave your home during the COVID-19 situation.

When you call to schedule an appointment, the triage nurse will assess your needs and determine if telehealth is appropriate for your appointment.

If it is determined that you would be best served in the clinic, we have three levels of screenings and protections in place to limit exposure of any kind.

Call (507) 388-2120 to schedule a medical or mental health appointment. You can always ask If telehealth is right for you.

Telehealth Safety

Telehealth appointments are just as safe and secure as in-person appointments, but with the benefit of being seen from the comfort your home.

Telehealth appointments are best by video conferencing— using your cell phone, tablet, or computer. If you do not have the necessary equipment at home, please let the scheduling nurse know. You may qualify to use (or borrow) public equipment.

Telehealth visits allow Open Door providers to see patients while limiting the risk of exposure to serious infection, including COVID-19.

Telehealth Affordability

Open Door Health Center works hard to make sure that all of your health care needs can be affordably met. If you have limited income, are uninsured, or are underinsured, you can be assessed for our sliding fee scale. Your fee is based on income and household size.

Most insurance companies are covering telehealth visits at the same rate as office visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Call your insurance company to check on coverage.

If you need assistance with reaching your insurance provider, let the scheduling nurse know when you call for an appointment.

Joining a Zoom (Telehealth) Meeting

Telehealth Tips

  • Download Zoom on your device before your video call to ensure a stable connection.
  • You will receive an email from Open Door Health Center that includes a link to a video call. This link is secure and different for every appointment.
  • Five minutes before your scheduled appointment, click on the link in the most recent email from your smart phone, tablet, or computer.
  • In order to protect your safety and privacy during your telehealth call, the nurse or provider may ask you if you are alone and in a safe and private location. This allows you to speak freely with your provider, allowing you to receive the best care possible.
  • The nurse or provider will meet you on the video call and give you some basic instructions on how to easily use the telehealth software.
  • If, for some reason, you are not joined by a nurse or your provider within 10 minutes of the start time of your appointment, please contact our scheduling line at (507) 388-2122 to let our staff know.
  • Please be on time for your scheduled telehealth appointment. If you do not join the appointment within 15 minutes of the start time, the provider will close the video session.
  • If, for some reason, you get disconnected from your provider during your session, please log back in to the same meeting using the original link. Your provider will do the same.

Ensuring a Productive Appointment

  • Try to get lighting in front of your face. This will help your provider see you better.
  • Keep your device stable. It is best if you can prop your device on a flat surface so that it does not move around.
  • Try to keep your head centered in the video.
  • Make sure you dress as though you are coming into the clinic for your appointments.
  • Please no eating or drinking during the meeting.
  • If you can, disable all other notifications on your device while in your appointment. When you check other notifications, we may lose the video of you.
  • Turn off any other sound that could cause distraction– radios, TVs, video games, etc.
  • Try to ensure a distraction free environment– keep pets out of the room you are in and try to have someone else watching children in the home to allow a private space for you.
  • Before your Zoom call, notify others around you that you will need uninterrupted time and space.
  • If someone enters your space during the Zoom call, notify your provider.
  • It may be helpful to use headphones (with a speaker) for increased privacy and improved sound quality.
  • Do not drive while using Zoom.
  • You must be in the state of Minnesota for your Zoom appointment to occur.
