Statement on the Death of George Floyd – May 2020
A message from the executive leadership team and the board of directors of Open Door Health Center in response to the death of George Floyd.
Over the last month (May, 2020), we have been shaken by the news of George Floyd’s death. The resulting protests and increasing news coverage of racial violence has uncovered other recent, horrific deaths to people of color in our communities. We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and communities of those whose lives were taken brutally and unjustly.
Here in Minnesota and across the country, people are hurting, angry, and afraid. The pain, fear, and distrust caused by systems of oppression undermine the health and wellbeing of our community as a whole. Racism, profiling, abuse, and the death of people of color has been tolerated in this country for too long. The trauma of systemic racism must stop.
Community Health Centers were born out of the Civil Rights and social justice movements of the 1960s. Community Health Centers were founded on the principle that all people deserve health care.
The Open Door Health Center vision is to create health equity. We are here– actively providing health care services, advocacy, and opportunity to all people in our community.
We are committed to working with leaders from public, private, and non-profit organizations, and anyone with the potential to drive the change our community rightfully demands. This work must address the historic and systemic racism in Minnesota if we are to be successful.
We stand for equity and justice for all.
We believe that black lives matter.
